WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR A HERNIATED DISC?

WHAT ARE THE TREATMENT OPTIONS FOR A HERNIATED DISC?

A herniated disc can be a very painful condition, but fortunately there are several treatment options available. There is no need to head right to the surgeon.

One the best approaches is to see a chiropractor who specializes in disc injuries, like Dr. Slovin.  Chiropractors have special training that allows them to evaluate the spine and remove any impingement of the nerve or disc by hand. This can provide significant relief from the pain of a herniated disc and the surrounding damaged tissues.

Cold therapy is also very helpful. Ice will help reduce inflammation and ease pain. When applied correctly, it can help move swelling away from the disc and speed healing.

In some cases, physical therapy may also be recommended. Physical therapy can help to improve range of motion and strengthen the muscles around the spine. It pairs well with chiropractic treatment. Your chiropractor can fix/align the joints, the physical therapist can then help mobilize the affected tissue and make the surrounding muscle connections stronger.

Surgery should only be considered as a very last resort, but in some cases, may be necessary to relieve pressure on the disc and surrounding nerves.

Whatever approach is taken, it is important to get treatment for a herniated disc as soon as possible to minimize the amount of pain, discomfort, and long-standing injury.

Do you have a friend or colleague with chronic pain because of a bad disc? It’s possible chiropractic can make a positive difference even several years after the injury happened even if they had surgery for the issue. You won’t know if there’s help available unless you ask. The consultation with Dr. Slovin is free.
