Subluxation and Gonstead Chiropractic Care Explained

Subluxation and Gonstead Chiropractic Care Explained

Subluxation is the primary disorder a Gonstead chiropractor treats. It’s a word used to describe a condition rather than a disease. When things seem to be going wrong, not working correctly, stiff, or painful, or you just don’t feel on top of your game, treating subluxations with the Gonstead method can help you get back to feeling like new.

What is Subluxation?

A subluxation is a disorder of the vertebral disc and the joints immediately above and below it.  A subluxation could be in the shoulder, elbow, ankles, wrists, or any joint. A Gonstead chiropractor treats subluxations without surgery and medications.

The most common type of subluxation treated in a chiropractor’s office is spinal subluxation.  It’s an inflammatory condition in the discs. Chiropractors use “vertebral subluxation” to describe the disc’s incorrect position, which may be causing some loss of function. Discs are located between the spinal bones.  When that spongy disc swells from time, overuse, or injury, it can compress the nerves traveling up and down the spine, affecting every area of the body.

Symptoms of Spinal Subluxation

Subluxations are indicative of a process rather than a single, static problem.  It’s a syndrome that leads to constant changes in the body’s tissues, including:

·         Development of muscle trigger points

·         Muscle atrophy or shrinkage

·         Rigid tissues and adhesions in the ligaments, tendons, muscles, and joint capsules

·         Swelling caused by excess fluid leaking from damaged blood vessels

·         Abnormal blood flow

·         Dead muscle tissue from lack of blood flow

·         Internal scar-tissue buildup, especially in cases of chronic back pain

How a Gonstead Chiropractor Treats Subluxation

Identifying specific areas of subluxation helps your Gonstead chiropractor target the problem areas in the musculoskeletal system. This process gives you the personalized treatment plan often missing in a general chiropractor’s office.  It’s a much more effective way to perform chiropractic care because we’re not just realigning everything and hoping it all falls into place.

Gonstead chiropractors use observation, examination, and special equipment to find these areas of subluxation and adjust them accordingly.  Here’s how it works:

·         Your chiropractor will start observing your gait, posture, and movements the moment you walk through the door.  They have a keen eye for any abnormality in the body’s position.

·         Spinal x-rays are performed when there is a severe disease, fracture, or concern for tear.

·         Dr. Slovin will then have you move in specific positions to look at your range of motion, posture, and gait in the exam room.

·         Palpation down the spine and across other areas of concern helps detect areas of abnormalities

·         A Nervoscope is used to examine the spine to detect changes in temperature, which indicates a problem by locating inflammation and muscle spasm.

·         Finally, Dr. Slovin performs a targeted adjustment of those problem areas

Treatment from a skilled chiropractor can sometimes relieve subluxation symptoms in the first session, but it can also take regular treatments to manage a long-term chronic, very sigificant or genetic condition.  Every patient is different, but at Slovin Chiropractic Center in Norwalk, we personalize treatments to help you reach your maximum improvement level as quickly and safely as possible.  When you’re finally ready to address and eliminate some of those pesky subluxations that have been making you feel like you’re 100 years old , come and see us!
