Burning Neck Pain: What it is and How to Treat it

Burning Neck Pain:  What it is and How to Treat it

Burning neck pain feels like hot needles.  Sometimes, the pain races into the shoulder, down the arm, and into the hands as well. The burning sensation can result from various injuries and conditions, some of which we treat with the Gonstead technique at Slovin Chiropractic Center in Norwalk.

The Causes of Burning Neck Pain

The most common cause of burning neck pain at our center is a sprain (in the ligaments) or strain (in the muscles). These are generally due to whiplash injury. Whiplash occurs when the head jerks back and forth or side to side in an accident or traumatic injury.

A few other causes of burning neck pain treated at our chiropractic center include:

·         Herniated disc.  When the gel-like substance separating the vertebrae slips out, it often causes nerve compression, which can cause a burning sensation.

·         Brachial plexus injury.  There’s a bundle of nerves that spread from the cervical spinal cord into the shoulder and arm.  If these are stretched, torn, or injured, it can lead to burning neck pain.

·         Radiculopathy.  Like a herniated disc, this condition causes a pinched nerve and is commonly the result of aging, but a trauma injury to the spine can also be the cause.

·         Central pain syndrome. Damage to nerves in the central nervous system causes a laundry list of pain symptoms, including burning neck pain.

·         Cervical spondylosis.  This is wear-and-tear on the spine because of age.  The discs get smaller and dehydrate, forming protrusions on the spinal bones (bone spurs).

·         Carpal tunnel syndrome, ulnar nerve palsy, sciatica, and other mononeuropathies.  This is damage to a single nerve that often leads to a burning sensation.

·         Torticollis.  A wry neck commonly occurs from a poor sleep position, bad posture (such as looking down at your phone for several hours at a time), or injury.

·         Stingers. The athlete’s body takes a beating, especially in contact sports like football, wrestling, and hockey.  When the head and shoulder twist in opposite directions, or if there’s a direct injury to the area just above the collarbone, the athlete may feel a burning or stinging sensation in the neck, shoulder, and arm.

Stingers in Athletes

This is an important topic to cover for our active and athletic Norwalk community.  A stinger is a specific type of nerve injury in the neck.  There are a few things you should know about it, such as:

·         It can cause weakness, tingling, and numbness in the shoulder or arm.

·         Symptoms are generally quick, but they often return, especially if there are multiple stinger injuries.

·         Multiple stinger injuries can lead to long-term nerve damage.

·         The best way to recover from the injury is to avoid the sport until the injury is treated.

Treating Burning Neck Pain

As with all conditions, treatment depends on the cause of the burning neck pain.  Our chiropractors focus on the Gonstead method to help with various conditions that present with a burning sensation. Here’s how and why the treatments work.

·         Gonstead adjustments are targeted adjustments to the spine, hips, and extremities. The techniques your Gonstead chiropractor performs are like putting the pieces of a puzzle in their proper place. To compare, a general spinal manipulation is like shaking up the box, throwing the pieces on the table, and hoping they all fall in place.

·         Treatments are non-invasive and drug-free.  This is a novelty in our current society, where pills of all shapes, colors and side effects are thrown out to the public like candy on Halloween.

·         We personalize treatment plans, and we don’t take a one-treatment-fits-all approach. That approach makes things worse.  At Slovin Chiropractic Center, we promise not to leave you in worse shape than when you came to us. Our personalized and targeted treatment plans are designed to get you back to mobility safely.

If you’re suffering from burning neck pain, see Dr. Slovin for a consultation. Even if you don’t know the cause, we can help you find it and give you our best advice on what to do next.  Don’t let it get worse.

10 Reasons You Need a Gonstead Chiropractic Cervical Adjustment

10 Reasons You Need a Gonstead Chiropractic Cervical Adjustment

Whether your neck pain is recent or long-term, a cervical adjustment can help resolve the issues that come from pain in this part of the spine.  Not all symptoms are apparent, either. Some of them come on immediately, while others wait years to tackle you down.  Therefore, a Gonstead chiropractic neck adjustment is your best bet for a safe and complete recovery.

Why Get a Gonstead Cervical Adjustment?

The Gonstead chiropractic method is strategic, specific, and targeted to specific areas of the spine that are out of alignment.  There’s always a spot or few that aren’t aligned.  As a Gonstead practitioner, I don’t do general spinal manipulations, especially in the cervical spine.  That’s like throwing a bunch of puzzle pieces in a box, shaking it up, and throwing the parts on the table, hoping they’ll land in the right place.

The Gonstead way is non-invasive, safe, and proven effective for a significant number of conditions.  A cervical adjustment may be where most of the focus will be, but Gonstead treatment targets all areas of misalignment.  We find them by using a few simple tools:

  • Full-spine X-rays are taken to help understand your body’s biomechanics.  Not just if we suspect a fracture, tear, or another type major injury.
  • Palpation of the spine both while still and in movement allows me to pinpoint areas of misalignment.
  • A nervoscope is a dual-probe device that takes the temperature in the spine to identify areas of inflammation.
  • Visualization starts when you walk into the office.  We pay attention to the set of your shoulders and hips, the height difference between the ears, as well as your posture and gait.
  • Symptomatology is all about understanding your total body health.  I can apply the most effective Gonstead chiropractic techniques to specific areas when I know all your symptoms.

10 Reasons for a Cervical Adjustment

A lot can go wrong when the neck’s out of alignment.  The cervical spine is made up of seven vertebrae.  These bones help make up the backbone, which allows you to move and feel everything from the neck down. Fluids, hormones, chemicals, and messages need to travel freely through these bones, or various things could go wrong.

Here are 10 reasons to get a cervical adjustment from a Gonstead chiropractor:

  1. You frequently suffer from a stiff neck, making it difficult to move your head side to side or up and down.
  2. You experience regular headaches (4 or more per month).
  3. There is frequent swelling or inflammation in your arms, hands, legs, or feet.
  4. You have high blood pressure, much of which is due to stress or constant neck pain and discomfort.
  5. You have regular episodes of unexplained numbness and tingling in the extremities.
  6. You feel like you’re running on fumes and tired all the time. The cervical misalignment may be disrupting your sleep quality.
  7. You’ve been in an accident or suffered a major injury at some point in your life. You’d be surprised at how many issues can show up years or even decades after a traumatic injury.
  8. You regularly experience dizziness or balance problems, which puts you at high risk while driving or operating machinery.
  9. You have a diagnosis of osteoarthritis that is not well-treated on medications, or you’re looking for a non-pharmaceutical approach to joint pain.
  10. Everyday wear-and-tear is one of the biggest problems in the spine.  We all get out of alignment, so even if you’re otherwise healthy, an adjustment from your friendly neighborhood Gonstead chiropractor may be what you’re missing.

If you’re in or around Norwalk and you’re looking for a safe and non-invasive way to reduce pain, improve performance, or just feel like yourself again, treatment from a skilled Gonstead doctor may be just what you need. Visit Slovin Chiropractic Center to experience the Gonstead difference yourself!
